Web designers take another look at WordPress as a CMS

As you will have noted in my recent spate of articles I have become very pro WordPress of late, this is because I have managed to develop and launch a number of sites recently in a record amount of time. As a freelancer designer and developer I can tell you that my effort to dollar or time:profit ratio is greatly increased when I used WordPress as my Content Management System of choice.

That is correct, CMS system, it is not just a blog system anymore. It can stand shoulder to shoulder with any of the other open source CMS systems currently available. To illustrate this point I have scoured the web to find examples of WordPress being utilised and extended to provide all manner of web sites.

As CMS for a major site: http://about.networksolutions.com/

I will start with Network Solutions. A massive organisation and once upon a time about the only organisation you could register a domain name through. They manage over 7 million domain names and nearly half a million websites today. This is a major company with a long history online. It also employs some of the best technical minds in the industry, and guess what they use to manage their massive “About Us” site? Correct, WordPress! An excellent example of WordPress as a CMS.

As a Realty web site: http://www.rwm.com.au/

WordPress is perfect for the small and medium sized Real Estate business, it can handle all of the business requirements and be used to deliver an interactive and user friendly solution.
That is right, WordPress is being used by more and more Realtors the world over. One fine example is Richardson & Wrench Mosman & Neutral Bay, which is a real estate agency based in Sydney Australia. Offering a sophisticated real estate business online by utilising the power of WordPress.

As a News Mashup: http://buzznewsroom.com/
Can you imagine the Huffington Post or the Drudge Report were to become a collaborative news blog? Using WordPress that is exactly what Buzz Newsroom manages to deliver. The site provides information as to what the Internet is buzzing about. Real people pick related stories, a news mashup. Visitors can share and comment on latest trends, videos or images.

As a major news site: http://news.zdnet.com/
This is major news site, it has to be ranked in the top 500 news sites online. Providing tech news and analysis, allowing readers to take a look at hot products, and read interviews with key business decision makers. A leading site for news, and resources for IT hardware, software, networking and services. The guys know what they are doing and they chose WordPress.

As a Travel Portal: http://www.101holidays.co.uk/
The web is a great place to research and book holidays, but sometimes the sheer volume of choice can be overwhelming and confusing. There is too much information out there, and not enough hard-earned wisdom. That’s why we created 101 Holidays, to provide a unique selection of some of the world’s greatest travel experiences. Each of the holidays on this website has been carefully researched, and individually chosen by two of Britain’s leading travel writers, David Wickers and Mark Hodson. Launched in January 2009, 101 Holidays was named by The Times as one of the year’s 10 Hot Websites.

As a restaurant guide and review: http://www.tastingvancouver.ca/
A perfect example of an alternative use for WordPress. This site is a complete portal to food in Vancouver Canada. Titled “Tasting Vancouver” this site although one of the newest kids on the block, through the ease of use of WordPress it has managed to grow significantly in a short space of time.

As a rich media portal: http://www.newteevee.com/
NewTeeVee describes and analyzes the future of the business of online video, including how high-quality digital video will be produced, distributed and monetized across the web. We dig into and analyze those ecosystems which connect the online video world to the business world along with audiences of traditional TV, movie theaters, mobiles, and other platforms. An industry insider publication initially, our audience now spans the spectrum of online entertainment professionals.

As a social Network: http://wannanetwork.com
WannaNetwork.com is an online real estate networking community created to help industry professionals expand their reach and enable business opportunities through social media.
WannaNetwork.com uses WordPress MU, bbPress, and BuddyPress to easily power a comprehensive and seamless professional networking site.

Of course as a blog with a difference: TIME.COM
The AOL TIME Warner behemoth utlizes WordPress in a multitude of its web properties. If the biggest Player online can see that WordPress can scale to its requirements I am sure it is sturdy enough for your needs.
